Numerology is a system of numbers, much like a language, with symbolic meanings attached to them. Once studied by early mathematicians such as Pythagoras, it is now considered a divination and not part of mathematics at all. These numbers can be used much like the signs in astrology. They symbolize characteristics and seem to “predict” events or certain happenings in time.

The only numbers used in numerology are the following: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 22. There is argument over whether the rare number 33 exists. Numbers 1 through 9 are matched with the letters of the alphabet to create a system that allows you to associate the number meanings with words.

Everything in this universe has a vibration and everything is vibrating at different frequencies. Likewise, numbers have their own frequencies and by associating your name and birth date with these numbers it can give you an idea of your own frequency. The numbers can tell you about your nature and personality traits. You will also notice these traits tend to be both of positive and negative nature.
 
The way a single number is produced from your name or birth date is actually fairly simple, but if you do wish to learn how to do it yourself, there are many website that will give you fairly informative readings for free.

To produce a number from your birth date, simply add all the numbers together and reduce the sum of those numbers to a single digit. There is, however, an exception to that rule; if the number is 11 or 22 it is not to be reduced. To produce a number from your name is slightly more involved. In numerology the Pythagorean numerological chart is used to match numbers to their corresponding letters. Once you have done that, just add them up and reduce to a single digit, unless the outcome is 11 or 22.

There are quite a few elements in numerology and they are derived from a person’s full birth name and birth date. These elements are called Core numbers and they are the Life Path, Expression, and Soul Urge.

The Life Path number
This number comes from your birth date. This number is a representation of the personality traits that you are born with and will carry though most of your life.

An example of a life path number
- Lets use a John Doe, he was born on 05/28/1987
- To determine his life path number, all the numbers in his birth date are added together
 - 5 + 2 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 40
- And then you would reduce 40 to 4 (4 - 0 = 4)
So his life path number would be 4

The Expression number
Sometimes called destiny number, comes from your full birth name. This number represents the opportunities presented to you in this lifetime and shows you what you are capable of achieving. Some numbers, especially the master numbers (discussed later on) may be very difficult to live up to.

An example of an expression number
- Lets use John Doe again here; we will say his middle name is William
- John William Doe
1 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 5 + 9 + 3 + 3 + 9 + 1 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 5 = 69
- Then reduce 69 to 3 (9 – 6)
So his expression number would be 3

The Soul Urge number
This number comes from the vowels in your name. This number reveals your inner desires, likes and dislikes. It is calculated the same way as the expression number, but only using the vowels and the “semi-vowels” Y and W, if the apply.

An example of a soul urge number
- Mister John William Doe
6 + 9 + 9 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 36
- Then reduce 36 to 3 (6 – 3)
So his soul urge would be 3
